I’ve considered buying enough pairs of socks for each member of our family so that we can just wear them once and throw them away.
Okay, not really - that would be a bit wasteful - but oh my goodness I am horrified at how many socks come out of the dryer without a match. I am certain the dryer eats them.
It never fails.
When I need to get my girls dressed and out of the house quickly, there are 11 matchless socks. We run around the house, checking other dresser drawers, laundry baskets, and under the coffee table, trying to round up two socks that can pass as a pair.
But often we have to settle for good enough. It’s a waste of time and, frankly, a waste of my brain power that something as simple as a pair of socks can cause so much chaos.
Determined to shrink our get-out-of-the-house time and the wasted resources on socks, I came across a brilliant solution.
It’s so simple: A hamper for socks only!
I now have a sock hamper for my kids, and a sock hamper for my husband and one for me.
It’s been life changing (no, really!). My battle with losing socks in the laundry is over.
Dump the sock hamper into a netted laundry bag. Wash your socks IN THE BAG! The dryer cannot eat them. It will change your life.
It’s taken a while to train my hubby (who does actually help out with the laundry!) not to dump out the bag of newly washed socks into all the other clean laundry.
Once we corrected that little error, our system has been flawless!
Try it! You will never lose a sock again… unless of course it doesn’t make it into the bag in the first place. ;-)
Besides socks, the other thing in my home that disappears like it’s going out of style is hand soap.
My kids go through it so quickly - and I don’t correct them because this is a good problem to have especially right now - but it’s expensive!
So again, I searched for a solution several years ago and found a recipe from my friend Erin over at Humbled Homemaker for homemade hand soap. I’ve been using this for years and it has saved my family hundreds of dollars.
Here’s the recipe to put in any foaming soap dispenser:
- Fill your soap container ⅓ full of Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap.
- Fill the remainder of the container with distilled water.
- Add your favorite essential oils. I love using Wild Orange or Peppermint!
And you can store extra in a jar for easy refills.
Having great ideas and fabulous products on hand is a must when it comes to this mom gig.
I’m so excited to share my favorites with you, because we’re all in this together!
Bonus Hack
When all else fails, head outdoors. Get some fresh air. Enjoy nature with your littles. It works wonders to inspire fresh perspective.
I am planting Seed Pops this summer with my kids. Gardening teaches the value of waiting for good things to come while we cultivate our new garden. We're growing flowers, fruits and veggies. We can't wait to taste the fruit of our labor.
Seed Pops are now on sale in the Musik at Home store. Why? Because growing a garden is much like growing musical skills. It takes time, tending, and care. I hope you'll jump in and get started on this journey together with your littles.
