Snackable Bio

Hi! I'm Kathryn Brunner! I'm an early childhood music educator. I am passionate about child development and music literacy. Since earning my license and certification as a Musikgarten instructor in 2005, I have had the privilege of leading over a thousand young children in joyful musical play in my own piano and Musikgarten studio, church and community.

I'm on a mission to help parents and children enjoy making music together! Here at Musik at Home I come alongside parents like you to help you incorporate music into every day life with your little one. I offer Musikgarten's developmentally sequenced classes by way of video to help you savor precious musical moments and give your child a solid foundation on the path to music literacy!

Coffee Break Bio

If you and I sat down to coffee and you were to ask me why I love music so much, here's what I'd love to share with you.  Honestly, music is such a part of the way I think and live, I would probably sing my way through life if I could. Music flows out of me seemingly on its own with my own children. It is an absolute joy to share with you what I do at home through my classes here at Musik at Home!

I've seen the astounding life changing benefits music brings to a child's life -- both in my own children and in the countless children I've taught. It is my heartfelt goal to pair quality instruction with intentional parent-child interaction in order to build your child's solid foundation for skillful musicianship.  Research shows that it absolutely essential to capture a child's music aptitude while it is at its height from birth to age 9. After age 9, it begins to rapidly decline. (You know how hard it was to learn a language in high school or college…. This is why! Our brains are shaped for learning music the same way we learn a language – sound before sight! Just like music, learning a language before age 9 is much easier because of how our brains are wired!).

My vision for Musik At Home came out of a difficult season of my life recovering from a debilitating injury while also taking care of my children full time at home.  My heart was broken because I could not take care of my girls the way I had always hoped I could as a mom. For over two years I could not take them to classes of any kind outside my home. While in full recovery mode, I knew I wanted to incorporate learning together with family fun, so I began to search for opportunities for in home video instruction. I was completely dissatisfied with what I found for early childhood movement videos and I couldn't find anything close to a music class! I began to feel strongly that a developmentally appropriate, quality music program should be available to parents who need an at home option. I felt a fire begin to rise up inside me as my background, training and passion for early childhood music education converged, and I realized I could and should take on the task of bringing music classes to life for instruction at home.

Since 2005, I’ve enjoyed teaching every level of Musikgarten’s curriculum including: Family Music for Babies, Family Music for Toddlers, Cycle of Seasons Preschool Music, God’s Children Sing, Music Makers at Home, Music Makers Around the World at the Keyboard, and Music Makers at the Keyboard. I’ve done birthday parties, special community events, and enjoyed being the MOPPETS music teacher for our local MOPS program for several years. Working with young children is a privilege and delight!

Since 2001, my piano studio in Vienna, Va has provided aspiring pianists a place to grow from beginning to advanced skill levels. Some of my graduating piano students have been accepted into the Berklee School of music, UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, one has become a signed pop/country artist, several are leading worship for their churches or college campuses and others have gone on to enjoy music as a lifelong pursuit and pleasure.

I’ve also had the opportunity to work as a singer/songwriter and recording artist. (My daughters and I compose songs almost every day for the sheer joy of it!). My music has been published worldwide, placing in the top 10 on international song charts for my 2014 release "Holding On to Hope" and successfully crowdfunding my Christmas album "Born This Day" in 2012 with the help of amazing friends and fans.

I write songs about what I believe is good, true and beautiful. My faith is the driving force in my life for all I do. From 2005-2013, I worked as a worship director at McLean Presbyterian Church in McLean, VA. I love leading worship in whatever setting I have the opportunity to do so.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gardner Webb University and a Master of Arts degree from Reformed Theological Seminary. I earned my certification in Piano Pedagogy from George Mason University. I am certified in early childhood music by the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association (ECMMA).

I don’t mention all these things to toot my own horn (musical pun intended), but to show you that I love what I do! I am so passionate about music that I’ve made it my life’s work.

I’d be honored to have you join me on this journey at Musik at Home!
